Mahjong 101

Everything you need to host your first game — without the panic.

00

A bow to where it began

Mahjong was born in 19th-century China, near the Yangtze delta. Its 144 tiles encode centuries of symbolism: three suits (bamboo, dots, characters), four winds, three dragons (red/center, green/prosperity, white/purity), and eight flower & season tiles. Before the Western adaptations, it was — and still is — a Chinese game. We start here, always.

01

What is American Mahjong?

American mahjong is a tile-based game for four players, adapted from the Chinese original in the 1920s. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) publishes a new official 'card' each spring — a list of winning hands that everyone plays from. The game is part skill, part luck, and entirely social. Most games last about 30–45 minutes per round.

02

What you need to play

A 166-tile set, four racks (with pushers), the current year's NMJL card, four players, and ideally a mat to dampen the shuffle. Bonus points for tea, snacks, and a host who knows their way around a steamer basket.

03

Choosing your first set

Look for acrylic tiles (heavier and crisper than plastic), a sturdy case, and a design you'd be happy to leave out on your console table. Our Jade Garden Tile Set is the most-requested first set — pretty enough to gift, durable enough to play with weekly.

04

How to host a mahjong night

Invite three friends. Set the table the night before. Brew a good pot of tea (oolong travels well). Print the day's hands from the NMJL card. Have snacks that don't require a fork — dumplings, pineapple cake, melon slices. Most importantly: don't worry about playing perfectly. The best mahjong nights are 80% conversation, 20% strategy.

05

Where to learn the rules

The NMJL publishes the official rulebook, and there are dozens of YouTube tutorials. We recommend booking one beginner class at your local club, or watching the "Let's Play Mah Jongg" series on YouTube. After two or three games, you'll have it.
